Artist Statement
"Embellished" In this series of work I have been focusing on the relationship between the background and foreground. My pieces are inspired by the handiwork of women from the 16th and 17th century, as evidenced on the clothing of subjects in 16th and 17th century portraiture. The Flemish and Italian painters were masters at capturing detail and likeness. It is in these works that hand worked stitching first caught my eye. Many people are familiar with the great masters of portraiture and their talents at capturing likenesses, however, my focus is on the incredible detail and artistry of the hand-stitching on the items of clothing themselves. I like the idea of flattening the background, taking away traditional perspective and using the background as a ground to focus on the textural details of the stitching and layering. Figures in my work are often partially wiped out or washed over to try to bring awareness to our propensity to appreciate and add value to a representational figure therefore negating the search into other areas of life/art, which may be equally intriguing and beautiful. |
