Annual Inspection Returns

The following transcripts of documents housed in the British Public Record Office show some of the Annual General Returns of the 64th Regiment while it was in Ireland.

Each year regiments were inspected by a General Officer, and at that time Returns were made that showed the current state of the regiment. These Returns contain various items, including the Officers' promotion history, the mens' age, height, and length of service.

Graphs taken from the data in the Returns are available in our Gallery, and graphs showing countries of origin for the regiment are available on a separate page.

Due to the tabular content of the Returns, they will prove difficult to read unless you are using a browser that supports tables.

There are certain inconsistencies in these documents, such as Lieutenant Bowes being promoted to Lieutenant some 11 months prior to gaining his Ensigncy (1767 Return). This error is in the original document, and is apparently due to inaccurate copying.

Major General Lord Blayney reviewed the 64th Regiment in 1767, and his comments were:

The 64th Regt of Foot are a very good Body of Men - tolerably well appointed - their Armes in very good order - perform'd their Manual Exercise very well - form'd ye Column from Companys, fired standing, & advancing by Divisions, & Grand Divisions very well - there was no great uniformity in ye Hatts, ye Men having white laced Hatts, ye Serjts yellow, & ye Officers no lace -
I review'd this Regt at Limerick, July ye 6th
Blayney

Major General Sandford reviewed the 64th Regiment in 1768

Major General Wynyard reviewed the 64th Regiment in 1785
