Phyllis Rhodes TeStrake
"How can anyone our age remember back to what happened forty years ago
after
graduation? Since that is a problem for me, I think my story will begin
with marrying Walt TeStrake 26 years ago, at which time I inherited his
two
boys (ages 11 and 13). Our family has now expanded with the addition of
a
daughter-in-law and granddaughter and another grandchild due the end of
October. Both Walt and I worked for Reynolds Aluminum for over thirty
years, the last four years of which were spent living in Moscow, Russia.
I
retired at age 50 and enjoyed traveling around Russia, as well as taking
periodical trips back home to Kilmarnock, Virginia. While in Russia, we
were allowed an R&R every quarter, and were able to travel around Europe
quite a bit as well. Walt retired two years after I did and we are now
living in Kilmarnock on Dividing Creek. Our "boat" is a 17 foot canoe
with
a two horse power motor! We also own a motor home and enjoy traveling
around the country. Our most recent adventure was a nine-week early
summer
trip to Alaska, the Northwest Territories, then across Canada and back
home
by way of New England. We're still young and looking forward to many
more
land and sea cruises."

Howard M. Cloke, III
Howard graduated from Marshall University in '68 and received his MBA in '76. He is a CPA with his office in Huntington,
WV. He and his wife, Lois, have three children: Martha, Howard IV, and Jonathan, and three grandchildren: Rachel (6),
Brady (4) and Shaun (1 1./2). Howard cannot come to the Reunion, but he says that if we have another one, he'll be there
come hell or high water.

Douglass, W. Birch III Sorry I won't be able to make the reunion, but my law firm
(McGuireWoods) is
having a partners' meeting/retreat in Florida that same weekend. I'll
be
putting a small check in the mail to help with the expenses. I know I
speak
for many others in thanking the two of you for all your effort. Feel
free
to add my e-mail address shown below to the class list/address
information.
Here is a
link to my bio page in case my
professional activities are of interest to the group. My limited amount
of
free time is spent sailing, golfing, and traveling. So, life is about
the
same. My wife Ginny and I have a second home in Gloucester County which
is
why no one sees us in Richmond on the weekends.

Pat Roop Webster I've had so much fun reading about everyone's lives that I've decided to send along some news about mine.
In the 40 years since TJ, I've been an active member and chair of national, provincial and local boards, particularly in the field of education. When the children were young, I started a lobby group advocating French-language instruction in schools. After twelve hard years, I received an honorary doctorate and an award from the Canadian government for promoting linguistic harmony. What makes me proudest, though, is to hear my own children speaking French so easily. Currently I am deeply involved in a multilingual international literary festival, Blue Metropolis (blue-met-bleu.com), co-chair of a fund-raising campaign for Bishop's College School (bishopscollegeschool.com), and sit on the boards of the Canadian Educational Standards Institute and the Stratford Festival, one of the world's leading Shakespearean theatres (stratfordfestival.ca). When I'm not at a desk, I'm out breaking fingernails in the garden.
My husband Norman is an editor and political journalist who still dreams of being an NHL hockey player and a professional golfer in the off-season. He plays hockey twice a week and golfs more than I like - but less than he does. At 50 and 55 he represented Canada at the world triathlon championships. We travel as much as we can. We've lived in China and England, and have made friends all over the world. We try to keep in touch with them - particularly those who have spare bedrooms!
We have five children. Will it surprise you to know that we are proud of them all? After starting out as a peace activist with a particular concern for East Timor, David (34) is now working towards his PhD in Asian history and international relations. He and partner Sean, a musician, live in Toronto. Andrew (33) teaches history at Cambridge University in England, specializing in 20th century Europe. Derek (31) is a writer and editor of a new literary magazine, Maisonneuve; his wife Kena, formerly a dancer with the Joffrey Ballet in New York, has made the move from the U.S. to Montreal with amazing ease and is now busy studying French! They will soon be the parents of our first grandchild, a girl. Gillian (26), a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton, is married and living in Boston, figuring out what to do with her life now that it doesn't involve Russian literature. Her husband Matt Levine is finishing a PhD at MIT in computer theory and working at Akamai, one of those unfortunate dot.coms whose stock is still plummeting. Hilary (24) is an art historian, photographer, would-be gallery curator and world traveller. She and her long-time boyfriend have just returned from 5 months in Asia where they climbed past Everest base camp before going cross country into Tibet.
Gill Warwick Sayer and I have remained close friends over the years and she will have to be my proxy at the reunion since, much to my regret, I can't be there. To all the old friends I'll miss seeing, a great big hello! To all those doing the organizing, a very special thanks. Please do it again for our 50th. If I'm still here, I'll be there!

Susan Rice BarbourWe continue to manage our rental investments; and since husband
retired almost 10 years ago from DuPont, we've done several cross
country
trips in our motorhome and this summer Amtraked across the country. I
travelled to my 50th state in 1997. My Pillsbury 1982 Pepperoni 'N
Cheese crescents Bake-Off recipe was nominated for Pillsbury First Hall
of Fame. In addition to being the original owners of our 1964 Porsche,
we now also have a 1936 Ford Sedan, both of which we enjoy parading and
showing. Osteoarthritis slows me down. Had two total hip replacements
when 49 and needing new knees. Continue to do volunteer work mostly
with church. In addition to our four children, we have four
grandchildren, two of which we raised for five years. My next adventure
is to start flying with husband in his airplane but I think I might
still
like the "big birds" better. My biggest and best
accomplishment.....being
married to same person 37 years.

Beverly Blevins NiemanAs a relentless under-achiever, I'll have to admit that I'm a bit
intimited by
the illustrious exploits of my intrepid cohorts, but I'll try to put my
best foot
forward. After working in Richmond and Vermont, I went to with the
Peace Corps
to Afghanistan, where I worked in the WHO Smallpox Eradication Program.
There I
met and married Berhnard Niemann, who was there with the German
Volunteer Service
working on a FAO Irrigation Project. We then lived in Aachen, Germany,
for about
eight years, where Bernhard earned degrees in traffic engineering and
city
planning, and I worked as executive secretary and medical translator for
the
pharmaceutical company that gave the world thalidomide. Bernhard's first
job took
us to Algeria, where he worked as consultant in an Algerian agency with
a
French/Italian technical team. From there we moved to the Dªsseldorf
area in the
Rhineland, where Bernhard took a job working for an international
consultant
specializing in projects in developing countries, and I worked on a
medical
journal at the Medical School of the University of Dªsseldorf. Following
the
birth of our daughter Rebecca (I'm a late bloomer) he was sent on a
project to
Malawi in southern East Africa, where we lived for five years. When
Rebecca
started school, we returned to Germany, where I started steadfastly down
the
Mommie track and Bernhard settled for short-term (4 weeks to 4 months!)
assignments to various contries, mostly in Africa. We now live in a
medium-sized
town called Langenfeld ("Long Field", which say it all), whose main
claim to fame
is that it was the place where they used to change the horses on the
mail coaches
between Dªsseldorf and Cologne. My daughter is now sixteen and will
spend the
fall semester with my sister Bobbie (see her biography), who apparently
can't get
enough of teenies, while I am left wondering whether there is a life
after soccer
motherhood.
I fly back home to Richmond (usually with my family) every summer and
often get
together with my far-flung high school friends, thanks to the
organizational
talents of Beverley Lee Lipscomb Walker. Unfortunately, I have to leave
Richmond
in mid-September this year and will not be able to attend the reunion,
but I wish
a wonderful time to all of you on the cutting edge of the baby-boom who
are able
to attend. (P.S.: I'm still a nerd, but now my hair is short.)

Margaret Ann Farrar GetzHello Everyone from Margaret Ann Farrar Getz! I am so sorry I will not
be
able to attend the reunion but we had already made our vacation plans
for
two weeks in Duck, NC. We always vacation there the first two weeks in
October and truly enjoy the "peace and tranquility".
Just a little about what I've been doing since 1961. In the Fall of
1961, I
attended Pan American Business College and graduated with a degree in
business. My first job was as secretary to a "confirmed bachelor". Two
years later Jim and I were married with a fairytale wedding. We moved
to
Northern Virginia -- Woodbridge as Jim was transferred and promoted to
Vice
President. I became a homemaker and we started our family with our
first
born son in 1963 -- James Jr. In 1965 our second son, Douglas was born
and
in 1971 we had our third son - Steven. We are very proud of our family
and
their accomplishments. We now have 5 granchildren -- 3 boys and 2
girls.
We spent 21 years living in Northern Virginia -- first in Woodbridge,
then
Occoquan and Manassas before moving back "home" in 1977. We have lived
in
Mechanicsville since then and love Hanover County.
We have enjoyed traveling both with family and in more recent years
enjoyed
the "empty nest" even though I would really love to have all of them
back
home -- if only I could hit the lottery and buy that perfect spacious
vacation home at the beach and RETIRE!
I am working as an Administrative Assistant at a consulting firm in
Innsbrook and truly love the work. If I can only hold out for 3 more
years,
I hope to retire. My husband retired 10 years ago and enjoys gardening
and
keeping the grandchildren on occasion. I have enjoyed catering as a
hobby
and have met so many wonderful people. I have won ribbons for baking at
both the Prince William County and Virginia State Fairs. Love to cook!
Have fun to all that can attend the reunion and I only hope that I will
be
able to make the 50th! Thanks so much to all of the committee members
for
their hard work and setting up the website so we can keep in touch.

Stephen StarbuckAfter leaving Richmond in the Fall of 1966, I attended Louisburg J.C. for one semester. Due to family requirements I returned to
Connecticut. After attending UConn and Cent Conn State I got a degree in History & Pol Sci. By this time I was married with 2
daughters. After a brief stint of teaching History on the H.S. level I went into college textbook publishing with Prentice-Hall and
later Harper & Row.
I was transfered to various areas ( R.I., Mass., N.Y. & Md./D.C.) I involved myself in politics, speech writing, campaign managing,
etc., but lost my political zeal with the death of Bobby Kennedy.
I migrated to Georgia in the early 70s and eventually found myself investing in real estate. I did four years in Florida and in the
late 80s and got onto the seminar circuit teaching Lease Option techniques, published a newsletter and was Pesident of the
Tampa Bay area real estate investors association.
By 1990 we finally wised up after 4 years of roasting in the Sunshine state and returned to Atlanta.
I have since been involved with investment properties, running a mortgage brokerage and having a role in a title company. I now
live with my wife Susan on a piece of dirt in the N Ga. mtns not far from Helen and in the middle of the area where Deliverance
was filmed (those folks are still here).
During the last 40 years I have not laid eyes on any of my TJ alums and often wondered about many of you i.e. who
accomplihed anything, who made through Nam, who is still alive, etc. Hence, my interest is peaked in attending our upcoming
fete.
I look forward to seeing you all in October.
